Carlos Tavares has no doubts, Formula 1 will have big problems in the future: here’s what and when they need to be dealt with.
The Formula 1 it’s a big world, affecting different areas of application even outside the track. One of these, without a doubt, is technological development which, today, is primarily focused on electricity in the future. At the heart of this debate is Stellantis, who had a direct relationship with Formula 1 until last year, thanks to the sponsorship between Sauber and Alfa Romeo.
Carlos TavaresCEO Stellar, during the Grand Prix Formula E Misano, in which Stellantis invests together with the Endurance World Championship. The words of the head of the car group were very clear, with a return to Formula 1 which today seems rather distant and distant. “Formula 1 is a fantastic vehicle for the development of hybrid technology. The problem is that it will go against each other ban on internal combustion engines starting from 2035. So I have a question: what do you do when the auto industry is facing a shutdown? So far they have taken advantage of hybrid technology to develop batteries and other components. But this is a strategic problem that they have to solve,” said Carlos Tavares.
Tavares, there is also an ethical problem: the details
Formula 1 is actively dealing with the problem, and in fact from 2026 the new regulation will come into effect which will triple the electric power of the hybrid power unit.
For Carlos Tavares, however, if Formula 1 was on the one hand a good investment, on the other hand it is an ethical barrier very big to overcome. “Formula 1 is probably the most effective marketing tool. This is the best section regarding the influence of media on people. The budget cap is an excellent tool for leveling costs and, as a result, investment returns, and this is why F1 is the best marketing tool. However, we must consider that it would be a huge cost, and that reasoning and ethical thinking would have to be done people in the factory. How can you look the workers in the eye and tell them we are spending 20 million euros on Formula 1 while they ask for a few cents? It is an ethical issue that I am very aware of, I am very close to my staff. Ethically this is a big problem for Formula 1,” concluded Tavares.
