Bittersweet birthday Sunday had Carlos Sainz in it Italian Grand Prixin which for a moment it seemed that he could climb onto the podium with FerrariHowever, the one-stop strategy backfired and he ended up losing the position to Oscar Piastri y Lando Norris.
The two pilots of McLaren were among the main protagonists of this Sunday’s race, especially due to the Australian’s maneuver on the first lap to overtake the Briton, who immediately lost his position against Charles Leclerceventual winner.
“There are no friends here, you can’t trust anyone,” Sainz joked when asked about the race, in which he finished fourth despite having at one point dreamed of victory.
“I thought I could win, I thought that all the cars that had stopped so early were going to two stops and I thought I could go to one. That gave me the chance to win the race. But then it turned out that even the one who stopped first could have gone to one stop,” analysed the driver from Madrid.
Despite not being awarded the win, which would have been his second of the year, Sainz was a key part of Ferrari’s home win. On much more worn tyres, the Spaniard did a great job of holding off Piastri and Norris enough to prevent them from closing the gap to Leclerc.
“We did a great job as a team by taking risks, trying to go for a one-stop deal. It was worth it because Ferrari won at Monza,” said Carlos, noting that for him the victory was more a success for the Maranello team than a mistake for the Woking team.
However, he admitted that the British could have done something different to have had a better chance. “It was a good move by Ferrari… then McLaren, having two cars in front, in my opinion they should have kept one car always ahead of the other Ferrari, doing the same as the Ferrari did. But it is easy to say now,” he concluded.
