Carlos Rodriguez Makes Stunning Comeback in 2023 Tour de France Stage 14

The star of the INEOS Grenadiers shines again at the 2023 Tour de France. After the winning escape of Michal Kwiatkowski on the Grand Colombier, it is Carlos Rodriguez who makes the British team enjoy, imposing himself in Morzine in the awaited fourteenth stage. The young Spaniard can’t keep up with Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard on the Col de Joux Plane, the last climb of the day, but going up at his (excellent) pace, he takes advantage of the marking between the two great rivals and, once he’s caught up, breaks them descent. A number built with class, leg and a pinch of luck and which allows him to move to third place in the general standings, unseating Jai Hindley. Pogacar beat Vingegaard in the sprint for second place, but lost to his rival in the last GPM, where time bonuses were up for grabs. The Dane, therefore, gains a second on the Slovenian and now has a ten margin margin in the very balanced challenge for the yellow jersey.

The record

It’s the day of the alpine stage at the 2023 Tour de France: five GPMs and almost 4200 meters in altitude between Annemasse and Morzine les Portes du Soleil, even if the finish line is downhill. There isn’t even time to warm up the leg before the race holds a twist. A maxi-fall, triggered by the slippery asphalt, involves more than half a group after about six kilometres. The race direction decides to neutralize the stage to allow all the runners to check their physical conditions and to return without problems. But the tumble ousted Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) and Louis Meintjes (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) from the game and killed several other riders. It starts again after several minutes and attacks are wasted to go on the run.

Everybody on the ground! Maxi fall: Vingegaard escapes and the stage is stopped

The Col de Saxel begins (3rd category of 4.2 km at 4.6%) and among the most active at the head of the race are the “usual” Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quick Step) and KristsNeilands (Israel – Premier Tech) . The two accelerate and are then joined by Alexey Lutsenko (Qazaqstan) and Dani Martinez (INEOS Grenadiers). The latter mocks Alaphilippe at the top of the climb. In the meantime, three more withdrawals arrive: Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost), battered after the initial crash, but also Romain Bardet (dsm – firmenich) and James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost), who crashed badly in the descent following the GPM extension. Before climbing again, also Michal Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Mikel Landa, Wout Poels (Bahrain – Victorious), Nils Politt (BORA – hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone, Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl Trek), Guillaume Martin, Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Alex Aranburu, Gorka Izagirre, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Michael Woods, Hugo Houle (Israel – Premier Tech), Lawson Craddock (Jayco AlUla) , Clement Champoussin (Arkea Samsic), Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X) are back at the head of the race for a total of twenty-two men in the lead.

Martinez too in the breakaway and the Colombian beats Alaphilippe at the GPM

Other riders flat on the downhill: Bardet struggles to stand and retires

Immediately after, the Col de Cou begins (1st category of 7km at 7.4%). Here the tussle for the polka dot shirt breaks out, given that all the main contenders are up front. Ciccone puts Lopez to work and manages to take the lead, ahead of Powless and Alaphilippe. The yellow jersey group doesn’t leave too much space given the composition of the breakaway and in this phase maintains the gap of less than a minute, thanks to the work of Jumbo-Visma. There is not a moment’s respite and after the descent – in which Aranburu, Izagirre and Johannessen gain something, the Col du Feu (1st category of 5.8 km at 7.8%) also immediately begins. Once again Ciccone accelerates well away from the brow, helped in the first part by Lopez. With them there are also Pinot, Landa and Woods. The Canadian is the most perky and tries to surprise the Abruzzese, who however is very attentive. Giulio launches an overflowing sprint for the GPM and strips his rival of paint, getting closer and closer to the polka dot jersey. Also because this time, Powless struggles and scores no points.

Ciccone is in another category today: another GPM won and Magrini loses his head

There are also some Italian fans on the street for Ciccone: “Go Giulioooo!”

For a moment Ciccone waits for no one and continues his action alone, but then, wisely, he lets himself be resumed by Woods, Landa, Poels, Aranburu and Pinot, while in a second moment Martin, Houle, Gorka Izagirre, Martinez and Lutsenko. The yellow jersey group approaches dangerously and is stationed at thirty seconds in this downhill phase. It was time for the Col de la Ramaz (1st category of 13.9 km at 7.1%) and also in this case Ciccone broke the delay first, practically at the start of the climb. Only Woods stays with him. But the Jumbo is a hammer and the group looms large. The Canadian springs first, leaving only the Abruzzese in the lead. But Cicco too had to give up and was picked up again eight kilometers from the brow, breaking away immediately afterwards. The pace of the Jumbo continues to be wearing and the group of the best is skimmed more and more. Van Aert is the locomotive in the last stretch and goes first to the GPM, in a platoon now reduced to seventeen units. There are of course Vingegaard and Pogacar, as well as Hindley, Rodriguez, the Yates brothers, Bilbao, Majka, Gaudu, Gall, Harper, Martin, Kelderman, Kuss, Castroviejo, Grossschartner. Pidcock, on the other hand, loses about thirty seconds.

Ciccone snorts! The Jumbo is returning and the Abruzzo rider doesn’t take it well

Van Aert was literally unleashed on the downhill and put some of the riders in the leading group in difficulty, including Simon Yates, Felix Gall and Guillaume Martin. But above all, it frustrates Pidcock’s return attempt (and Soler, Buchmann and van Baarle together with him). Thus, only twelve men remain in front: van Aert, Vingegaard, Kuss, Kelderman, Pogacar, Adam Yates, Majka, Grossschartner, Rodriguez, Hindley, Bilbao, Gaudu. After a few kilometers of tiring chase, when the road already pulls slightly upwards, Simon Yates, Harper, Gall and Martin manage to close the gap. The Col de Joux Plane (hors catégorie of 11.6 km at 8.5%) always begins with van Aert in command of operations.

Van Aert is scary even downhill! Bilbao manages to return, Simon Yates detached

The Belgian moves to make way for Kelderman, but at that point the UAE surprises Jumbo. Pogacar sends Majka to shoot and messes up the plans of the Dutch team, up to there in total control. Van Aert, who had already broken away, was invited by the flagship to return to the group and he did so with the physical and mental strength of top of the class. The class of ’94 still works for a few hundred meters before giving way to Sepp Kuss. The American’s pace is as always lethal for many and only Vingegaard, Pogacar, Adam Yates, Rodriguez, Hindley and Gall remain ahead. After a stall phase, the hard section is entered and Gall and Hindley also lose contact. 4.5 kilometers from the summit, Adam Yates moves and only Pogacar and Vingegaard remain with the British. The Slovenian launches his attack about a kilometer later.

“Pistaaaaaa!” Van Aert returns to the group and puts them all in line: the Belgian is sensational

Again Vingegaard loses a few meters, but never sinks. Pogacar maintains an advantage of twenty meters for about two kilometers and when he realizes he can’t make the gap any further, he waits for the Dane. The GPM is more than a kilometer away and the two begin an incredible study phase, pedaling almost on the spot. A marking that allows the never domo Rodriguez to get very close, in the phase that actually decides the winner of this stage. 500 meters from the brow, Pogacar sets off again but has to give up almost immediately because the bikes in front of him are too close and dampen his sprint. The Slovenian is visibly annoyed and makes fun of Vingegaard, who launches the sprint at the right moment and gains a three-second bonus over his rival at the GPM.

Resounding! Pogacar attacks Vingegaard but is blocked by a motorcycle

At -9, Adam Yates and Rodriguez return on Pogacar and Vingegaard and the Spaniard goes straight. Pogacar had to lead the chase alone, because his teammate was also slightly delayed on the downhill and Vingegaard certainly didn’t relieve him. But the chase is in vain. Rodriguez maintains the small advantage until the finish line and takes the third success of his young career, certainly the most important. Pogacar baptizes Vingegaard in the sprint, but in the total calculation of the day he concedes a second to his rival. For the next challenge, in all likelihood, it will only be necessary to wait a few hours.
