Carlos Rodón threw a ‘no hitter’ to the Cleveland Indians

Chicago – The left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón, of the White Sox de Chicago, flirted with perfection Wednesday by pitching 8.1 perfect innings before hitting a batter, but eventually managed to complete a no-hitter, no-run game in his White Sox’s 8-0 win over the Cleveland Indians.

He was the 20th ‘no hitter’ in White Sox history. It is also the second no-hitter, no-run game in less than a week, after Joe Musgrove of the San Diego Padres will pitch another against the Texas Rangers.

Rodón stayed two batters from a perfect game, something that is not recorded in 2012, when the Venezuelan Félix Hernández got it for the Mariners de Seattle before the Rays of Tampa Bay.

The 28-year-old southpaw fanned seven while playing the perfect game into the ninth inning. Leadoff hitter Josh Naylor was retired on a ground ball whose endgame had to be revised at first, but it favored Chicago.

The second batter, Puerto Rican Roberto Pérez, was the next to bat and received a pitch that put an end to hopes of a perfect game, but that kept the ‘no hitter’ alive. Rodrón seemed to regain his strength and struck out Yu Chang without throwing him for the second out and closed his mound gem by retiring Jordan Luplow with a grounder for third.

Yermin Mercedes had another spectacular night going 3-for-5 with a monstrous two-run homer. He towed three laps while Yoan Moncada was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Rodón was selected by Chicago with the third pick in the 2014 draft. He has been hampered by injuries in recent years, but he earned a spot in the rotation during spring training and pitched five innings in a 6-0 win at Seattle in his first start of the season.

He was supposed to pitch Monday against Cleveland, but scratched himself due to an upset stomach.
