Nothing works between France and Carlos Ghosn. The former boss of the Renault-Nissan Alliance is indeed in the sights of the French tax authorities. According to information from Release, the businessman who has taken refuge in Lebanon for almost a year is thus risking a “mega-recovery”. The services of Bercy have also already seized nearly 13 million euros on its property and bank accounts as a precaution. Information which has not been confirmed by Bercy.
This new case for Carlos Ghosn is in the hands of the national direction of the verifications of fiscal situations (DNVSF). The body is responsible for delicate tax audits. It was following one of them that she would have initiated proceedings against the former car magnate. The DNVSF indeed considers as fictitious the tax move of Carlos Ghosn to the Netherlands in 2012. The latter considered, for his part, to be resident in Amsterdam. A statute which should allow him to pay his taxes in the Netherlands.
Ongoing negotiations
While the procedure is still ongoing, the French tax authorities have already requested the temporary mortgage on the businessman’s Paris apartment. A seven-room property located on avenue Georges-Mandel and owned by his wife, Carole Ghosn. The property was purchased 5.9 million euros in 2019. He also requested the provisional mortgage for half of a villa in Yvelines, the freezing of 538,000 Renault shares and securities and receivables for a value of nearly of 500,000 euros, precise The echoes.

According to information from Liberation, the seizures have been validated by a judge while negotiations are taking place between the former boss of Renault and Bercy and the notification of the recovery has yet to be confirmed. Still, this case could tarnish, a little more, relations between France and the businessman, who already accuses France of having “let go” after his arrest in Tokyo, in 2018.
Multiple cases
Carlos Ghosn is the subject of multiple legal proceedings, in particular accused of abuse of corporate assets or concealment of income. He is also targeted by a judicial investigation in France, grouping together several investigations, in particular concerning two evenings organized by the businessman at the Palace of Versailles. He is also under investigation into payments of several million euros to a Renault-Nissan distributor in Oman.

The National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) in Paris is also taking a close interest in the former boss and has opened a judicial investigation for “abuse of corporate assets” and “corruption” concerning consulting contracts with the Dutch subsidiary of the group. On the Japanese side, Nissan claims 80 million damages related to “mistakes” and “fraudulent activities”.
