After the Astros sign-stealing scandal that occurred in 2017, AJ Hinch, Jeff Luhnow, Alex Cora and Carlos Beltrán were banned from the Major Leagues for one year. While Hinch and Cora have already rejoined the league, Carlos Beltrán will take his first steps in MLB since 2019.
The YES television channel, in charge of coverage of the Yankees in the New York area, reported that Beltrán will join the team of analysts during the broadcasts of the “Manhattan Mulos” as local.
It was added that the former major leaguer will be involved in 36 Yankees games during the next campaign and it was explained that he will participate in that number of games in honor of the shirt that Beltrán wore during his time in the Bronx.
For the former Puerto Rican outfielder, this is his first opportunity in MLB since his suspension. Prior to his punishment, he was hired as manager of the Mets and was released as soon as MLB concluded the investigations against Houston.
Likewise, after his retirement, which occurred in 2017, Beltran was interviewed for the Yankees managerial position (position held by Aaron Boone) and in December 2018 he joined the club’s management as an adviser to Brian Cashman.
Hall of Fame, next step?
For next winter, Beltrán will be a candidate for the Hall of Fame for the first time (he has 10 years to be elected). But nevertheless, his involvement in sign-stealing while he was still an Astros player could undermine his voting credentials ─something that Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens experienced due to their consumption of prohibited substances.
On the sporting front, Beltrán presents arguments to be considered in Cooperstown. In 20 years as a professional he recorded .279/.350/486, 2,725 hits, 1,587 RBIs, 435 home runs, nine invitations to the All-Star Game and a world champion pennant.
