Boris Becker sees the change of power in tennis after the Wimbledon victory of the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. “One thing is clear: we have a new king – and his name is Carlos Alcaraz,” said the three-time Wimbledon winner of Sport Bild: “Even before the tournament, Alcaraz was number one.”
Alcaraz followed in Becker’s footsteps by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. The 20-year-old Spaniard is the youngest champion on the sacred pitch since the German, who won the final against South Africa’s Kevin Curren in 1985 at the age of 17 years and 227 days.
Becker especially praised Alcaraz’s performance against his former protégé Djokovic. “In 2022 he won the US Open. Now in his second year, he has confirmed the performance with a win over his closest rival. Novak Djokovic himself said after the final that Alcaraz was a mixture of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and himself – which is the biggest compliment ever. I’ll leave that statement as it is,” said Becker.
