Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, ranked first in the world, qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open tennis tournament, after defeating Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Defending champion Alcaraz needed an hour and 57 minutes to beat Arnaldi, in their first meeting.

This is the third time in a row that Alcaraz has reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, and he also hopes to become the first player to successfully defend his title since 2008, when Swiss Roger Federer won the title for the fifth year in a row.

Alcaraz said after his victory, referring to Arnaldi: “I tried not to allow him to find any weaknesses in my performance. I try to put him within his limits every time I can and in every match and against every opponent. I try to present my performance and my style in the match.”

He added, “Honestly, I played great matches and performed well with high efficiency. I hope to continue with the same performance. For me, nothing matters to me except to perform and be happy with my level on the field. This is the only thing I care about now. All the pressure that people put on you.” On the defending champion, I ignore him and focus on my performance.”
