Those were frightening moments for Carlo, when he suddenly became unwell. “If I feel a lot of pressure, it will play on my chest,” he says in the magazine. The TV Canteen all in once out: “Then I felt too much pressure and I ended up in the hospital,” explains Carlo. “I played my last character of that season, Lee Towers. I took off the wig and collapsed. I was in the hospital with a lot of pressure on my chest.”
The presenter is now aware that he can be too absorbed in his work and now and then has to let go of the ‘control freak’ in him. ”Then [na zijn ziekenhuisbezoek, red.] I thought, okay, so we’re never going here again. I can’t do them all alone, those male types. And sometimes I lost myself for hours in the preparation of a type, it didn’t go so well and everything ended up in the trash. I was too much locked up in my own head. Now I’m taking it a bit less and we’re working with more guest actors.”

It is therefore not surprising that Carlo temporarily stops with the popular program. According to the presenter, that was not a difficult decision: “It is not possible if you already do five other programs. And say for yourself: imitating people at a table, we’ve seen that for a while, haven’t we? The saturation hits a bit because of all the other types on TV.”

Carlo has not always been as busy as he is now – with success programs like The Masked Singer, I Can See Your Voice on Married at First Sight – has. It was once very different with the popularity of the presenter and that is why he counts his blessings every day. ”In the beginning of my career I started well at the AVRO, but then went very badly in the first years at RTL. Then you build something up: a kind of shield that I was able to use later on when things did go very well. That shield tells you not to let your success go to your head: it can be over in no time.”
