MADRID – Real Madrid can count on Luka Modric in Tuesday’s first semi-final of the Champions League. The Croatian midfielder was absent for several weeks due to an unspecified injury and there was a threat that he would not play again this season. However, he started at the end of Saturday’s cup final against Osasuna Pamplona (2:1).
“Luka will start, he can play without problems” said coach Carlo Ancelotti about Modric’s current state for DPA. His side knocked out Manchester City at the same stage in the previous year’s Champions League, pulling his side’s promotion to the finish line in the home leg. The helmsman drew attention to Erling Haaland, who has already scored 51 goals this season, before the upcoming match.
“They have a more complete team than last year. Gabriel Jesus was very dangerous, but different to Haaland. We have to watch him. And it’s not just about him, we have to try to stop a team that looks unstoppable. Their style has remained the same, but now they can benefit from long and punched balls,” Ancelotti assessed the form of the upcoming opponent.
His team has successfully reached the final of the Spanish Cup, but has lost two of the past three matches in the league. However, he no longer has a real chance of winning the title in the domestic competition. “We want to play comprehensively and show our best. It will be decided by the opponent and we want to go there with an advantage.” Ancelotti concluded.
