Carlee Russell Admits to Fabricating Abduction Story, Apologizes to Community
Hoover, AL – Carlee Russell, the 25-year-old nursing student who sparked a massive search after claiming she was abducted from the side of Interstate 459, has admitted that her story was a hoax. Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, sent a statement to Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis on Monday morning, stating that his client had fabricated the entire incident.
“My client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf: There was no kidnapping on July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident, but this was a single act done by herself,” Anthony wrote.
Russell’s attorney also stated that she was not with anyone or at any hotel during the time she was missing. He added that Russell apologizes for her actions to the community, the volunteers who were searching for her, the Hoover Police Department, and other agencies, as well as to her friends and family.
“We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and intends to move understanding that she made a mistake,” Anthony said. “Carlee again asks for your forgiveness and prayers.”
Anthony did not disclose where Russell spent the 48-plus hours she was gone. He also denied reports that she was at the Red Roof Inn, which had been widely circulated on social media.
No charges have been filed against Russell yet, but the Hoover Police Department is in discussions with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office about possible criminal charges. Chief Derzis stated that they will announce those charges if and when they are filed.
When asked about the motive behind Russell’s fabrication, Derzis said, “I wish I could tell you. I think only Carlee knows, and maybe her attorney knows now.” He also expressed his gratitude that Russell at least released a statement, acknowledging the efforts of the community and law enforcement in searching for her.
Russell seemingly vanished on July 13 after calling 911 and a family member to report seeing a toddler walking alone on the busy interstate. She claimed to have been abducted by a man and a woman, but authorities were unable to verify most of her initial statement.
The search for Russell involved multiple agencies and was described as an “all hands on deck” effort. The exact cost of the search has not been determined yet, but Chief Derzis stated that they are working on obtaining that information.
While the investigation is ongoing, the statement from Russell’s attorney does not alter the course of the investigation. Police are still hoping for an opportunity to interview Russell and gather more information about the incident.
In the meantime, the community is left with unanswered questions about why Russell fabricated the disappearance and what truly happened during the 48-plus hours she was missing.Carlee Russell Admits to Fabricating Abduction Story, Apologizes to Community
