Carla Del Ponte calls for an international arrest warrant for Putin

Carla Del Ponte, the former chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, has accused Vladimir Putin of war crimes. She supports an arrest warrant for the Russian President.

In several interviews on Sunday, Carla Del Ponte (75) spoke out in favor of issuing an international arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The prosecution in The Hague have already begun to initiate investigations. “I hope that this arrest warrant will be issued as soon as possible,” the former chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia told the Italian daily “The Republic” and the Ticino Sunday newspaper “Sunday”.

It is clear that war crimes and crimes against humanity are being committed in Ukraine. The perpetrators of these crimes must be held accountable, including the military and political leaders. “But the first person responsible is undoubtedly President Putin.” An arrest warrant will have no effect as long as Putin remains in Russia, but his international freedom of movement will be severely restricted.

criticism of the United Nations

Del Ponte was shocked by the war in Ukraine. “I’ve seen mass graves, but I didn’t think I’d have to see them again.” Incidentally, Del Ponte explains that she certainly sees analogies between Putin and the former Serbian head of state Slobodan Milošević, who tried to legitimize his attacks on Albanians in Kosovo in the early 1990s with the presence of terrorists.

The former chief prosecutor made a critical statement to the UN: “I confirm my position that the UN has become too politicized and that the Security Council in particular is blocked by vetoes and procedures. He is now more concerned with humanitarian aid than with the goals for which he was created, namely the preservation of peace.” The peace negotiations for Ukraine should actually be led by the UN Secretary-General.
