Carl Hagelin Retires from NHL after 11 Seasons and Stanley Cup Wins

On Wednesday, Carl Hagelin announced that he is ending his NHL career and putting his skates on the shelf. This after eleven seasons in the world’s best hockey league.

Hagelin, who won Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, has not played since suffering an injury to his left eye in March 2022 during a practice with the Washington Capitals.

The 35-year-old also underwent double surgery on his left hip last season and spent all of 2022-23 on injured reserve for Washington.

– It has been a wonderful journey, but it ends here, writes Hagelin in a post on Instagram

– Unfortunately, the damage to my eye is too serious for me to continue practicing the sport I love. I am extremely grateful for all the memories the sport of ice hockey has given me. I have loved every day.

The Swede was selected by the New York Rangers in the sixth round, as the 168th player overall, in the 2007 NHL draft and recorded a total of 296 points (110+186) in 713 regular season games with the Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Capitals. He also accounted for 50 points (22+28) in 141 games in the context of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

– I will miss the feeling of going into battle together with my teammates on a daily basis, Hagelin continues. I will miss how the seasons went up and down.

– There was nothing better than stepping out onto the ice in front of 20,000 passionate supporters. I want to thank all my amazing teammates, coaches, doctors and other team employees that I have met and played with over the years.

– Last but not least, I want to thank my family, my wife and my children for all their support. They made it possible for me to live out my dream.
