Cáritas, April 11, 2023.- The Cáritas Soup Kitchen, located in the “Padre Cruceyra” Social Center in Algeciras, has resumed, today April 11, its work of offering lunches inside its facilities. In this way, the normal operation of the dining room, altered when the confinement by COVID19 was decreed in March 2020, is recovered. Prior to the opening of the room, the Archpriest of Algeciras, Francis Castillo, has blessed the food that will be served on this first occasion. At this time, the human team, volunteers and technicians, and the director of Cáritas Diocesana de Cádiz have participated.
Although during these long and difficult years, people in need have continued to be cared for, the required social distance and the limited capacity of this resource meant that people could not enter the dining room, forcing a change in the care model. traditional social service and opting for a meal preparation service served in portable containers. However, despite the fact that the people who came to receive food aid did not have access to the dining room, this service has not been stopped at any time.
As he explains, the management of Cáritas Diocesana de Cádiz “For Cáritas, being able to open the dining room doors again and being able to offer help inside is very important, because our vocation is to welcome and help people in need and offer our help in the most dignified way possible. Cáritas, once again, sits you at their table.
The dining room will offer, as before COVID, two meal shifts in which a total of 100 people can be served. During the two years that the service has been altered, the Cáritas technical team has carried out an analysis of the social reality of the people who come to this service and has established a new process for reception, referral and social care. The result of this study will establish an improvement in the responses of Cáritas to each personal problem and will connect the soup kitchen with the Cáritas network in the parishes of Algeciras and with the social assistance project for the homeless that is located in the same center. social.
From Cáritas we appreciate the invaluable collaboration that volunteers, private donors and companies have offered during this time, Area of Social Affairs of the Hon. Algeciras Town Hallas well as Civil protection. Without their help, Caritas would not have been able to continue offering help despite the increase in users of the service and the rise in prices, especially since the war in Ukraine began.
As stated by the Secretary General of Cáritas Diocesana de Cádiz: “Although we have an important contribution from the Junta de Andalucía, from the Algeciras City Council and from many private donations, it is essential to have more aid because the rise in the cost of food and maintenance of the building puts the continuity of the activity at risk«.
Similarly, in addition to the need for more funding, Cáritas considers it vitally important to recover the volunteers who, prior to the pandemic, attended this project daily, since by returning to serving meals indoors, an increase in volunteers is required to Cover the different weekly meal shifts.
