Caritas Raises Awareness of Increasing Poverty in Salzburg due to Rising Housing Costs

Social

More than 60,000 people in Salzburg are at risk of poverty. Another 19,000 people actually live in poverty. Above all, the increased housing costs are becoming an existential challenge for many people – Caritas is drawing attention to this on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

From January to September alone, 12,000 people turned to Caritas’s social counseling service, meaning more people sought help this year than in the whole of last year. According to the Catholic aid organization, 13 percent of Salzburg residents are at risk of poverty. The consultations show that the rising housing and energy costs, as well as the ongoing interest rate increases, are putting more and more people in financial distress, says Salzburg Caritas director, Johannes Dines: “This especially applies to those who were already there before this wave of inflation, hardly had enough. And these higher fixed costs mean that these people are left with far too little to live on.”

Caritas responds with a more comprehensive offer of help

Caritas is trying to counteract the additional monthly costs with more offers of help. In addition to acute emergency aid, the aid organization focuses on sustainable help and prevention for those affected. It is fatal that housing and living costs are rising disproportionately compared to wages, and what is needed again is a minimum level of security and not a maximum level of coverage, demands Dines.
