Caritas Association Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald: Facing Bankruptcy, What’s Next for the Organization?

It was known that the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald Caritas Association had financial problems. Now it is clear: the association is threatened with bankruptcy. How does it go from here?

The Caritas Association Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald has filed for bankruptcy due to impending insolvency. The association announced this on Thursday in Freiburg. The difficult economic situation can no longer be averted any other way, said the new CEO Hans-Georg Liegener. So that the association can continue its social work as before, external experts will develop a so-called restructuring plan in the coming months. This is intended to reposition the association economically.

The quality of care should not be compromised

“There are no restrictions on the scope or quality of the care and support offered,” said Liegener, chairman of the board who has been in office since August. The care and support of people in the association’s nursing facilities is secured through the self-managed restructuring process, it said on Thursday. The employees would also continue to receive their money. As things stand, your jobs are safe.

Association with hundreds of employees

The Caritas Association Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald has been in severe turbulence for some time. Due to the threat of insolvency, the association’s chairman was replaced in August. At the end of July, the public prosecutor’s office searched Caritas rooms in the Freiburg area. She is investigating possible fraud in the billing of care services. The Caritas Association’s lawyers rejected the allegations and criticized the search as “disproportionate”.

Around 800 full-time and more than 400 volunteer employees work at the welfare association. It offers, among other things, outpatient and inpatient care services. There are several interested parties for the nursing home in Glottertal, which is currently closed, said Liegener. He is confident that a “good” new provider will be found by the end of the year.
