Former Grand Slam champion Mary Carillo believes that Carlos Alcaraz’s temperament is more like Rafael Nadal than Roger Federer as she definitely sees the similarities between Alcaraz and Nadal.
Alcaraz, who just turned 19 less than two weeks ago, is often compared to Nadal and there’s certainly a reason for that. Just like Nadal, Alcaraz won his first Masters title and finished in the top 10 at 18.
Alcaraz is already becoming known as a great fighter and someone who gives his best every time he steps onto the pitch. “We’ve talked about the Big 3 for so long, but in recent years it’s been the Big 1,” Carillo told the New York Post.
“And we’ve talked about the ‘next gen’ for so long. “[Alcaraz] said he grew up idolizing Federer but he’s much more Rafa in temperament and plays every point for what it’s worth,” added Carillo.
“He was down 0-40 on serve, he still thinks he should win this game. He’s that guy. He plays with the joy of an eight-year-old trying to show you that he can do 100 push-ups.”
Carillo: Alcaraz can win a Grand Slam this year
After winning Masters titles in Miami and Rome, Alcaraz has his sights set on winning his first Grand Slam at the upcoming French Open.
During her interview with the New York Post, Carillo was asked if Alcaraz could win a Grand Slam at the age of 19. “Why not?” Carillo answered. “He lacks best-of-five experience in Majors but not much else that he is without.
It would be a thrill.” When Spanish players are asked about Alcaraz, they all use one word: humble. “Nadal has spoken about how well [Alcaraz] and how humble he is,” added Carillo.
“His uncle Toni told Rafa early on to stay hungry, stay humble. This kid embodies that.”
