Cargo Ships Depart Ukrainian Black Sea Ports Amidst Reopened Port Controversy: Latest Updates

Three cargo ships today left Ukrainian Black Sea ports after being loaded, the marine traffic monitoring system MarineTraffic reported, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The vessels use the temporary “humanitarian corridor” that was drawn up by Kiev after Russia abandoned the agreement that allowed safe passage of Ukrainian exports.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said last month that three cargo ships were heading to Ukrainian Black Sea ports to further export food and steel.

They were to load 127,000 metric tons of agricultural products and iron ore for China, Egypt and Spain.

After invading Ukraine last year, Moscow closed Black Sea ports from one of the world’s biggest grain suppliers, which Kiev and its Western backers called an attempt to use global food supplies as a means of blackmail.

Moscow has said the ports could be used for arms shipments. As of July 2022, the ports were reopened under an agreement brokered by the United Nations and Turkey that allowed Russia to inspect the ships’ cargo. Moscow reneged on the deal a year later and reimposed a blockade, saying its demands for better terms for its own food and fertilizer exports had been ignored.
