Cargo ships collided in the Baltic Sea; two people disappeared into the water

In the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Sweden, two cargo ships collided, resulting in one capsizing and a rescue operation.

The incident took place in the Baltic Sea area between the southern Swedish town of Istad and the Danish island of Bornholm.

The incident, which took place early Monday morning, is thought to have involved two people in the water – screams were reported from the cold water, the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) said.

The overturned vessel Karina Hoeja is registered in Denmark. The second ship is the Scot Carrier, flying the flag of the United Kingdom.

An SMA spokesman said the two people in the water were the only people on board the Karina Hoeja.

“It’s very cold and dark,” an SMA spokesman told the BBC. “Currently, water is about 4C and air is about 5C.”

The emergency call was received on Monday at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time. As the rescue team later approached the scene, they reported “screams in the water.”

Divers were involved in the rescue operation, but none of the missing were found. Two helicopters and several boats from Sweden and Denmark have been involved in the search and rescue.

Scot Carrier is also helping to repair the Danish ship and return it to a nearby port. Everyone on the Scot Carrier is considered safe and healthy.-

The cause of the collision is not yet clear.

Karina Hoeja went to the south of Denmark after leaving a settlement near Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday. There was no cargo in it at the time of the incident

Scot Carrier was on its way to the east coast of Scotland. It is not clear what cargo it carried and how many people were on board.
