The world famous Semperoper is home to prestigious ensembles such as the Dresden Staatskapelle – steeped in tradition as one of the oldest orchestras in the world – the State Opera Chorus, the Semperoper Ballett and numerous international guests. Saxon State Opera has played a central role in the history of opera and classical music through its close associations with great conductors and composers such as Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Destroyed in 1945 in the closing months of world war two, the Semperoper was rebuilt in 1985, thereby resurrecting one Europe’s most beautiful and renowned opera houses.
Together, the Saxon State Opera (Semperoper) and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden form the institution known as Saxon State Theatres (Sächsische Staatstheater Dresden).
