According to the latest “Cross-sectional Study of Risk Factors for Cardiovascular and Other Non-Infectious Diseases in Latvia” (2019), 28 percent of the Latvian population has high blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg, including 33 percent of men and 24 percent of women.

According to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology, arterial blood pressure should approach 120/80 mmHg at any age. If it exceeds the limit of 140/90 mmHg, it is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Hypertension and Atherosclerosis President of the Association prof. Kārlis Trušinskis: “High blood pressure or hypertension is a significant risk factor for both dementia and heart attack and stroke. It is especially dangerous in combination with high levels of low-density or ‘bad’ cholesterol and blood sugar. Its prevalence is also increasing among younger people. Stress , time spent with smart devices, smoking, sedentaryness and fast food – all of this affects and promotes the development of high blood pressure in the 20s and 30s.

This problem is easy to diagnose, and a wide range of medications is available, but the goal of normalizing and achieving blood pressure is far from over. The main barrier is cooperation with the doctor and equality in treatment. Therefore, please make repeated visits with your doctor while taking doses and stabilizing your blood pressure and heart rate! We cannot do this in one day. Additional tests are often needed to make treatment appropriate. And take the medicine regularly, because only regular use of it is effective in normalizing blood pressure and, consequently, in preventing heart attack and stroke. I also very much hope that the officials of the Ministry of Health will hear the demand of patients, doctors and pharmacists to find a solution to the frequent turnover of medicines, which is related to the shortcomings of the system of reimbursable medicines. This should be done so as not to jeopardize the goals of treatment that have already been achieved in a difficult way. “

Inese Mauriņa, head of the patient association “ParSirdi.lv”: “Hypertension is the leading cause of death in the world. Almost 600 million people in the world have high blood pressure, one in two people have no idea that he has high blood pressure or hypertension, so many people know This year, in cooperation with the Latvian Society of Hypertension and Atherosclerosis, we join the global campaign “Because I said so”, inviting everyone to address their loved ones – family members, friends, co-workers – to encourage check your blood pressure and take action. By detecting heart health risks in a timely manner, we can prevent them and prevent health complications from developing. “
