(Vatican News Network) On Sunday, September 10, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for Canonizations of the Holy See, presided over a solemn mass in the village of Markowa in southern Poland, canonizing nine members of the martyr Ulma’s family. The nine members of the family who were canonized as Blessed are: father Jozef Ulma, mother Wiktoria Ulma, their children are Stanisława, Bal Barbara, Władysław, Franciszek, Antoni and Maria, as well as an unnamed child born at the time of the martyrdom in Viktoria child.
In his homily, Cardinal Semeraro noted that during the cruel days of the Second World War the home of the martyr Ulma became “an inn that welcomed and cared for the despised, the abandoned and the dying.” Joseph and Viktoria lived “a holy life that was reflected not only in their married life but in their entire family life.”
The head of the Congregation for Canonization also affirmed the Christian witness of the unnamed infant among the new martyrs. “Today, without uttering a word, this little saint cries out to the modern world to welcome, love and protect life, especially those who are defenseless and marginalized, from conception to natural death,” he said. The child’s “innocent voice seeks to shake the conscience of a society where abortion, euthanasia and contempt for life see life as a burden rather than a gift.”
In conclusion, Cardinal Semeraro noted: “The heroic story of the Ulma family encourages us to respond to the throwaway culture condemned by Pope Francis.”
