Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said that fasting is not a kind of diet, but rather an effort to choose God’s grace by renouncing self-love, leaving self-love, and renouncing the alliance with sin.
On February 16, 1918, in connection with the celebration of the anniversary of the independence of Lithuania, he gave a message in the middle of the Holy Sacrifice he offered in the Church of Jesus’ name in Rome on Friday.
Cardinal Parolin said fasting has deep biblical roots and reminds us that our existence is marked by a constant spiritual struggle between humility and egoism, between selfishness and self-giving. Therefore, fasting is not only abstaining from food, but primarily “breaking the bonds of wickedness, loosening the bonds of the yoke, setting free the oppressed and breaking every yoke,” Cardinal Parolin exhorted, quoting verse 6 of the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 5.
He invited everyone to pray for peace, noting that war has sown the seeds of unrest in many parts of the world, including Ukraine.
