According to the newspaper AS, the legal dispute between Cardiff and Nantes over the tragic death of Emiliano Sala in 2019 continues, with the Welsh club seeking a compensation of 120.2 million euros due to the relegation they experienced in the Premier League after the death of the Argentine striker. Although the two teams initially agreed on a sum of 17 million euros for Sala, the plane crash in the English Channel drastically altered the course of events.

The figure of 120.2 million euros is based on an analysis by the company Analytics FC, hired by Cardiff, which specializes in football data. This analysis considered the probability that the club would have avoided relegation had Sala remained in the team, estimating that he would have participated in approximately 60% of the season’s remaining matches. Cardiff’s relegation in 2019, led by Neil Warnock, occurred when it finished third from the bottom of the table, just two points from safety.

On the other hand, Nantes has also taken legal action, seeking compensation for moral damages and a fine against Cardiff in a “counterclaim” procedure. However, FIFA ruled in 2023 in favor of Cardiff, ruling that Sala’s transfer had been completed and forcing the Bluebirds to pay the agreed fee of €17 million. Cardiff are now hoping to recoup that fee and a considerable sum more in their legal battle with Nantes.
