Cardiac patients should take blood thinners as usual | Free press

Covid-19 reports of serious illnesses can cause heart disease – and lead to wrong reactions. The Heart Foundation warns of this. And gives advice for emergencies.

Frankfurt / Main (dpa / tmn) – Heart patients should continue to take their blood-thinning medication during the corona pandemic. It is therefore not advisable to withdraw them on your own initiative due to uncertainty due to assumed complications in the event of infection with the virus.

The German Heart Foundation emphasizes this. What cardiac patients who take anticoagulants should do: If they get Covid-19, be sure to inform their treating physicians that they are already taking medications to prevent thrombosis.

According to the foundation, this prevents unwanted double treatment with anticoagulants. According to the experts, physicians see a connection between coagulation disorders and serious courses of Covid-19 – “with complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism up to death”.

Corresponding reports have led to uncertainty, particularly in patients with heart problems who are associated with an increased risk of embolism and infarction and who therefore have to take blood thinners on a permanent basis.

As a preventative measure, the experts recommend sport to keep the heart fit. Running, cycling or gymnastics increased blood flow and vascular elasticity, and reportedly reduced the risk of severe Covid 19 disease if infected.
