Earlier this week, the rapper appeared on the cover of the November issue of Footwear News magazine, to promote his own collection with Reebok.
It did not go completely painlessly, and the rapper has now been accused of cultural appropriation.

Strong criticism
In the magazine, she was photographed as the Hindu goddess Durga, something she quickly got her passport signed for. according to SNL Durga is one of the great goddesses of Hinduism, and she is portrayed as a beautiful and strong woman.
“People say Cardi B pays homage to our goddess Durga, so as a Hindu I would say: 1. wearing shoes in a temple is forbidden. 2. Durga should not be used for aesthetics. 3. Durga is NEVER pictured lightly dressed. “This is not a tribute, it is disrespectful”, writes a very dissatisfied user on Twitter, according to Us Weekly.
“Obviously this is Cardi B who ‘pays homage’ to the Hindu goddess Durga … This is simply racist,” writes another, according to People.
“Cardi B does not pay homage to the goddess Durga by holding a shoe in her hand, this is pure disrespect and by no means a brutal understanding. She can not get away with this without addressing it and apologizing for bullying our culture “, writes a third.
The “WAP” rapper thus went out with a public apology on Instagram this week. She did this in the form of a video, in which she promises to be more careful next time.
– I’m sorry, guys. I did not mean to offend or to disrespect anyone’s culture. I can not change the past, but I want to be more careful in the future.
–
– I’m sorry
Further in the clip, the 28-year-old explains that the brains behind the campaign wanted her to portray a goddess who represented strength, femininity and liberation. However, the rapper admits that she understands why it came out wrong.
– I did not try to be disrespectful. Maybe I should do more research. I’m sorry, I can not change the past, but I will do better in the future.
However, it is not just the 28-year-old who has gone out and complained after the storm of complaints. Footwear News, which published the photos, has also issued a public statement.
– One of the pictures was meant to pay homage to the goddess Durga, and the intention was to show a strong woman. We realize, however, that we did not take certain cultural and religious perspectives into account, and that this can be perceived as highly offensive, they write, adding that they have learned from this, and that they published new photos to front the campaign.
This autumn, the rapper released the song “WAP”, together with rapper Megan Tree Stallion. At the time, however, the criticism was not directed at Cardi B, but at reality star Kylie Jenner (23) – who also appeared in the music video.
The background for the criticism was that many believed that Jenner had nothing to do in a music video that aims to promote black culture, partly because she has previously been accused of cultural appropriation against blacks.
