Cardi B Faces Controversy Over Tweet About Jewish Lawyers

JTA — Entertainer Cardi B learned Thursday that Las Vegas police will not charge her in connection with an incident of throwing water bottles and a microphone at a recent concert.

Reacting to the legal victory, the rapper quickly turned to Wikipedia, tweeting an image that depicts the digital encyclopedia’s entry for “religious Jewish clothing.”

The image shows two Hasidic Orthodox Jews walking through Borough Park in Brooklyn. One wears a fur hat called shtreimel and a stalls, a prayer shawl, over his clothes; the other has long lame – or curls, locks of hair (one on each side of the face) typical of Orthodox Jewish men.

“Remember…” she wrote.

Her fans immediately linked it to the lyrics of her 2018 song “Bickenheld,” in which she sings, “The lawyer is Jewish, he’ll unpack all the charges.”

Jewish lawyers are a recurring theme in rap music, and Cardi B’s legal team on the Las Vegas incident included several Jewish lawyers.

But while some interpreted the tweet as praising her Jewish lawyers, others found it offensive because Cardi B seemed to attribute her lawyers’ success to their Jewish identity, not their skills. (The men in the photo are not Cardi B’s lawyers).

” Thank you @iamcardibbut tweeting your 31 million followers a vague photo of a visible minority who have been the subject of an increase in hate crimes in New York City is simply not acceptable,” tweeted David Bashevkin, a leading Orthodox voice on social media.

“When hate is an option, don’t let anyone guess what you meant. »

Faced with backlash from social media, the tweet was deleted without comment. The phrase “The lawyer is Jewish” remained popular on X, formerly known as Twitter, for some time.
