Card Stop gets new phone number

Anyone who loses their payment card or has been the victim of fraud can now have their bank card blocked by calling Card Stop on 078-170.170. Bank federation Febelfin and Minister for Telecommunications Petra De Sutter reported this on Monday. The old number will remain in existence for a while to guarantee a smooth transition.

The change is prompted by the amendment of telecom legislation. In addition, thanks to the new number, no additional costs will be charged from now on. With the old number, 30 cents per minute was charged. “Pay extra to prevent criminals from withdrawing money with your stolen bank card. That is the world upside down,” said Minister of Telecom De Sutter, who calls on everyone to use the new number from now on.

Just like the old number, the new number can be reached around the clock in Dutch, French and English. You can also call Card Stop from abroad.

Unique in Europe

In order to make the new issue known to the general public, there will also be a Febelfin campaign in collaboration with the FPS Economy.

Card Stop is an initiative of the Belgian banks and dates back to 1993. The initiative is unique in Europe and processed 824,127 calls last year. Most calls come from customers who have lost their card (68 percent), but Card Stop is also contacted in the event of fraud via the Internet (25 percent) or in case of theft (8 percent).
