Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Incident at Bronx Building Requires Hospitalization of 13 Residents

A total of 13 people had to be admitted to a Bronx hospital due to exposure to carbon monoxide that broke out in the building where they live.

The incident occurred at 800 Twin Park South East, at 180th Street. Around 7:30 a.m. this Wednesday, there was a call to 911 reporting the poisoning.

Our reporter Joaquín Torres, from Univision 41, went to the scene and found that at noon there was still a strange smell and that all the residents of the building had to be evacuated so that the authorities could investigate.

One victim is in critical condition due to carbon monoxide inhalation.

Emergency services who responded to the building reported that carbon monoxide levels dropped after they turned off the boilers.

In addition to the 13 people who were taken to the Jacobi Medical Center, another victim was admitted in critical condition.

Joaquín Torres pointed out that several elderly people live in the building, so they are more sensitive to inhaling this type of toxic gas.

What does inhaling carbon monoxide cause?

According to experts, when carbon monoxide is breathed, it enters the body through the lungs and then passes into the blood, reducing the ability to transport oxygen and disabling cellular function.

Inhalation may cause headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness, and loss of muscle control.
