Carbon Management: Clear the way for CO2 storage

When it comes to climate protection and reducing CO2 emissions, there are two approaches: CO2 avoidance or CO2 capture and storage. The latter has not yet been a real political approach in Germany. But that is now set to change.

According to the Federal Government Key points paper “Growth Initiative – New economic dynamics for Germany” a future carbon management strategy and corresponding changes to the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act were approved by the cabinet in order to reduce the costs of decarbonization, strengthen the competitiveness of German industry and achieve climate neutrality. The government now wants these measures to be implemented quickly in order to comprehensively facilitate the use of CCS/CCU in Germany and to enable the offshore storage of CO2. Federal states can also store CO2 on the German mainland (onshore) if they decide to do so under state law.

In the key points paper, the Federal Government calls on the German Bundestag and the Bundesrat to complete the necessary parliamentary procedure quickly. We will take appropriate measures to speed up the development of the necessary infrastructure.
