In a stage that was passed by the rain, the general classification underwent abrupt modifications and now the Tour de France has a new leader. Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz had a combative performance and rose positions in the table.
The stage began with emotions at a thousand revolutions because during the first kilometers there were some attacks trying to escape, however, little by little the main platoon always managed to catch those who tried to escape. Wout Van Aert and Pogacar were among the contenders for the title who made attempts to go to advantage, but were eventually hunted.
Before starting the first ascent, the race was calmer with the whole group as a whole. Until the first mountain pass in Cote de Mont-Saxonnex Carapaz was at Pogacar’s wheel, but from then on the ‘Locomotive’ could not stand the strong step of the Slovenian who almost took the victory if not for the breakaway of Belgian Dylan Teuns, who won with a time of 3 hours 54 minutes and 41 seconds.
The great protagonist of the day was precisely the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar who imposed an infernal pedaling on the ascent to the last two passes and took enough time to get fully into the fight and put on the yellow shirt. The general classification is now being led by the Slovenian with a time of 29 hours, 38 ‘minutes and 25 ”seconds. The Dutch Mathieu van der Poel suffered in the high mountains and lost the lead, now being more than seventeen minutes away.
After his combative performance during the eighth stage, Carapaz managed to place himself in sixth place overall, remaining 5 minutes and 01 seconds behind the head of the race.
This Sunday the Tour de France will once again have a high mountain stage with 144.9 kilometers between Cluses and Tignes.
