Caracol did not publish that Antonella Petro’s house in London will cost $217 million

To the Empty Chair DetectBot (+57 3102940910) An image of an alleged news item published by Noticias Caracol arrived that says: “Antonella Petro’s house in London will cost 217 million pesos per month in rent.”

The image has been circulating on Twitter (now X) (1, 2, 3) and Facebook (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), so we ran the Lie Detector on it and found it to be false. Noticias Caracol did not publish that news. The image is a montage created by the Uribe youth and disinformation account of X, @JovenCD.

Although President Petro said on August 30 that his youngest daughter would leave the country, on September 6 he shared a message in which Antonella Petro confirmed that she was returning to Colombia to finish her studies.

This is the fake image that is circulating:

The image is a montage

Searches (1, 2, 3) with keywords from the alleged headline of the news did not yield any results that prove its veracity. This is an indication that it is false information, because if it were true that Noticias Caracol published that Antonella Petro would live in London in a house whose rent would be $217 million, there would be a record of the news and other media would have republished it.

A reverse lookup The image showed that it was first shared by the @JOVENCD account on September 3.

This group describes itself as “the youth of the Democratic Center in Santander” and constantly spreads montages that appear to be news published by media outlets in Colombia. La Silla has verified several of them (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). All are accompanied by a box that says: “Twitter: @Jovencd.”

However, since the image has the Noticias Caracol logo, we checked their social networks (Twitter, Instagram y Facebook) y Web pageand there is no record proving the veracity of the information.

The last two news diffused by Noticias Caracol about Antonella Petro were the August 31st and the September 6thThe first, published three days before the image we are checking was circulated, reported that the president’s youngest daughter was leaving the country. However, there was no mention of the house where she would live or London. In fact, it was not known where Antonella would go.

According to Gustavo Petro, the minor has suffered “psychological persecution” and the consequences of growing fascism in Colombian society. In the notethe medium remembered that on November 16, 2023, the president’s daughter left the Metropolitan Stadium in Barranquilla crying amid boos.

In fact, the photo used in the circulating image is from a few days later, on November 19, when the president’s youngest daughter went to see the Millonarios vs. América game at the Campín. Her brother Nicolás Alcocer Petro published it with a message in reference to the Barranquilla episode.

A black box was added to the montage with the text: “Antonella Petro’s house in London will cost 217 million pesos per month in rent” and the Noticias Caracol logo next to the label “Politics.”

But the newscast’s publications have different styles: the headlines have a blue background, the font is different, and the logo is used without a background in the upper right corner. And sometimes the photographs are smaller.

This is a comparison between the fake image that is circulating and two original posts by Noticias Caracol on Instagram:

Finally, September 6ththrough an Instagram story —which was shared by the president— Antonella Petro reported that she was returning to the country:

For all these reasons, we rate the image as false.
