Thanks to a 12-6 victory against the Rouge et Or of Laval University, the Carabins of the University of Montreal won the fifth Dunsmore Cup in their history. This is a second success in three finals in front of their supporters at CEPSUM.
The Carabins will host the Western University Mustangs in the Uteck Cup next Saturday at noon at CEPSUM.
The Blues’ defense was particularly dominant. Édouard Doyon (Business Administration, HEC Montréal) and Kaylyn St-Cyr (Business Administration, HEC Montréal) set the tone in the first quarter with an interception each. The cornerback even brought the ball 56 yards further into the end zone.
Louis-Philippe Gauthier and St-Cyr helped tie a team mark in the playoffs with four steals in the same game. The defensive unit also recorded two sacks and three tackles for losses.
The packed house did more than its share during the clash. The 5,100 fans helped provoke numerous offside and illegal procedure penalties on the opponents’ side.
Even though he played his quietest match of the season, Jonathan Sénécal (Business Administration, HEC Montreal) led the attack well. The quarterback accumulated 204 yards in the game, including 175 passing. His favorite receiver was Carl Chabot (Business Administration, HEC Montreal) who caught 11 passes for 94 yards and 20 yards on punt returns.
The Carabins will face the Western Mustangs for the first time in their history. The Carabins have won two Uteck Cups in three appearances.
