Star quarterback Jonathan Sénécal was nearly perfect and the defense unstoppable as the Carabins beat the McGill University Redbirds 43-11 on Saturday.
Sénécal (Administration, HEC Montréal) was the driving force behind the Montreal attack. The quarterback had 354 total yards, setting a new personal best for touchdown passes with four. No less than nine receivers caught one of his 25 passes in 29 attempts in the game. Hassane Dosso (Addiction Intervention) was the most productive with gains of 97 yards and a touchdown.
It feels good to come home, admitted Sénécal. The atmosphere here is amazing. If I threw passes to nine different receivers, it was because they were ready to play.
Number 12 started the game strong by throwing a touchdown pass to Lyshawn Dubois (Access-FEP), from the first offensive sequence. He added three more on catches from Dosso, Alexandre Dudley Jones (Advertising) and William Legault.
Glodi Halafu for his part reached the end zone thanks to a good run.
Philippe Boyer (Physical Education and Health) completed the scoring with two field goals and a single. The Redbirds also allowed two safety touchdowns.
The intractable defense
The defense allowed just one touchdown when the game was already out of reach. Gabriel Maisonneuve (Electrical Engineering) with a quarterback sack, Harold Miessan (Urban Planning) with an interception and two hard-hitting tackles and Édouard Doyon (HEC – Administration) with four tackles and a knockdown were the Carabins leaders.
It’s been eight months since we played, we’re hungry and it’s a good feeling, admitted Miessan.
Our defense has had the same identity for a few years now, it’s tight and we didn’t expect anything different today, added Marco Iadeluca, the team’s head coach.
The Carabins begin the season with a victory for the seventh consecutive year. Their next game will be on 1is September when they visit the Concordia Stingers. The match will be broadcast on TVA Sports at 7:00 p.m.
