Operation against the Camorra in Caivano: eighteen people were arrested by the Carabinieri as part of an investigation into the infiltration of organized crime into the government and administration activities of the municipality, dissolved for mafia by the Council of Ministers last 16 October, in particular in the management of public works contracts.
The criminal organization managed to obtain confidential information from public administrators relating to the awarding of contracts.
Nine of the 18 people arrested were arrested on October 10th. The detention, a precautionary measure, has now been replaced by a precautionary measure. The other 9 people involved are still part of the same investigation: they are 6 local building contractors, placed under house arrest, while the others are exponents of local organized crime. The charges are, for various reasons, mafia-type association, extortion aggravated by the mafia method and crimes against the Public Administration.
According to the results of the investigation, on more than one occasion, public employees acted as intermediaries between entrepreneurs and the Camorra in requesting payment for extortion, or in withdrawing the money. The entrepreneurs themselves were victims of the extortion request, but they managed to obtain the positions through corrupt ‘gives’ to compliant municipal administrators and managers.
