The stomach pain of retired corporal Antonio Vivone was caused by a perforated intestine. The feces had invaded the abdomen and would have caused the fatal infection. These are the first indications that the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Salerno has reached, which is investigating the death of the 60-year-old carabiniere.
The investigation is “playing” on timing. Vivone had been in two hospitals, in Salerno and Cava de’ Tirreni, before being admitted to Eboli. It was August 26, when he arrived at Maria Santissima Addolorata. Apparently, his intestine was already perforated. Stool was already leaking out. The clinical picture required urgent intervention, to avoid infections, internal complications and death. Which is what happened.
The prosecutor in charge of the investigations, therefore, will ask the surgeons of Eboli for the timing of the operation. The Prosecutor’s Office is convinced that Vivone should have been operated on immediately. With the utmost urgency. To limit the damage, to fix the intestinal perforation and prevent the patient’s death.
Why was the surgery “delayed”? This will be the first question the doctors will have to answer. At the moment, there are no names in the register of suspects. No doctor is accused of manslaughter. The investigative framework could change in the coming days.
The prosecutor asked the Carabinieri to seize the part of the intestine, about a meter and a half, removed by the surgeons in the operating room. The truth could come from there.
