WhatsApp Introduces ‘View Once’ Photos and Videos: A Focus on Privacy and Control
WhatsApp has rolled out a feature allowing users to send photos and videos that vanish after being viewed.
This "View Once" option is designed to give users more control over their privacy and limit the permanence of their shared media.
"Not all photos and videos need to be permanent digital records," WhatsApp explained in a statement. "Taking up valuable storage space on devices can be a concern, too."
This feature further enhances user privacy by preventing recipients from taking screenshots or saving the ephemeral content. It also eliminates the ability to forward or mark the files within the app.
"Any photos and videos you send won’t be saved to the recipient’s Photos or Gallery," WhatsApp clarified in its Help Center.
However, WhatsApp acknowledges that recipients could still capture the content using other devices before it disappears. Additionally, the View Once files have a 14-day expiration window after they’re sent.
Even if backups are enabled, these disappearing files can’t be recovered; they are deleted once they’ve expired.
Here’s how to send a photo or video using the View Once feature:
-
Open the WhatsApp application.
-
Navigate to the chat where you want to send the disappearing media.
-
Tap the paperclip icon.
-
Select the photo or video you wish to share.
-
Tap the icon resembling the number "1" located near the bottom of the screen below the file description.
-
Press the send button.

## WhatsApp’s “View Once” Feature: A Game Changer for Privacy and Digital Footprint?
**WhatsApp’s recent introduction of the ”View Once” feature, allowing users to send disappearing photos and videos, has sparked conversations about privacy, control, and the evolving nature of digital interactions.** This new functionality adds another layer of protection for users concerned about the permanence of shared media and its potential impact on their online footprint.
To delve deeper into the implications of this update, we spoke with **Dr.Emily Carter, a leading expert in digital privacy and communication at the University of California, Berkeley,** and **James Thompson, a cybersecurity consultant specializing in social media platforms.**
### Understanding the ”View Once” Functionality
**World Today News:** Dr.Carter, could you explain how WhatsApp’s “View Once” feature works and what distinguishes it from simply deleting messages after they’ve been viewed?
**Dr. Carter:** “View once” takes ephemerality a step further. Once a recipient opens the photo or video, it vanishes from their chat, ensuring it’s not permanently stored in their device’s gallery or WhatsApp’s servers. this offers greater control over when and how visual content is accessed, addressing concerns about screenshots or unwanted sharing.
### Balancing Privacy with User Experience
**World Today News:** Mr. Thompson, some critics argue that disappearing messages could be misused for malicious purposes like sharing inappropriate content without accountability. How does WhatsApp’s approach balance privacy with the responsibility of preventing abuse?
**James Thompson:** While the potential for misuse exists with any communication platform, WhatsApp’s implementation emphasizes clarity and user awareness.
The recipient is explicitly informed that the media is set to disappear after viewing. Additionally, WhatsApp has safeguards in place to detect and address potentially harmful content through its reporting and moderation mechanisms.
**”Taking up valuable storage space on devices can be a concern, too.”**
### the Impact on Digital Identity and Data Management
**World Today News:** Dr. Carter, how do you think “View Once” will affect the way people manage their digital footprint and define their online identities?
**Dr.Carter:** It’s a significant shift towards more intentional and mindful sharing. This feature empowers individuals to curate their online presence by choosing what content remains accessible long-term.
It also aligns with the growing awareness of data privacy and the desire to control how our digital data is used and stored.
### Looking Ahead: The Future of Ephemeral Communication
**World Today News:** Mr. Thompson, do you foresee disappearing messages becoming a standard feature across communication platforms?
**James Thompson:**
Absolutely. As users prioritize privacy and control over their online experiences, ephemeral communication is highly likely to gain traction.
we’re already seeing similar features implemented by other platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.
The increasing demand for transient communication signals a desire for more nuanced and contextualized interactions in the digital sphere.
### Key Takeaways and Next Steps
WhatsApp’s “view Once” feature marks a significant step towards a more privacy-conscious digital landscape. By offering greater control over the lifespan of shared visual content, it empowers users to shape their online experience and define their digital identity on their own terms.
