The Chinese division of the American agency JD Power again pleases us with interesting research. Until recently, we wrote about the smartest brands, and now the researchers presented the car satisfaction rating for 2023. It assessed how satisfied customers were after buying a vehicle.
How was the rating calculated and what are its overall results?
The JD Power agency annually conducts a survey among car enthusiasts on the topic of satisfaction with the purchased car. More than 25,000 people from 70 cities in China, who bought a new car from 2 to 6 months ago, take part in this survey.
The survey results are interpreted by JD Power specialists as a numerical satisfaction index (Sales Satisfaction Index, SSI). The maximum value in it is 1000 points (SSI). The focus is on the process of choosing a car, test drive, purchase and delivery. And, of course, customers are asked if the car has met their expectations. Here, the focus is on performance, safety and other characteristics of the car.
As a result of the study, it was confirmed that premium brands (exclusively imported) satisfy customers to a greater extent than the mass market – 765 SSI versus 752 SSI. Compared to last year, the premium segment added 16 points, while the mass brands added only 2. At the same time, JD Power experts found that Chinese car enthusiasts like to buy hybrids and electric cars more than gasoline cars. The difference in rating is 738 SSI versus 715 SSI.
Car Satisfaction Ranking 2023: Branding
As we have already noted, it is not customary to include home brands in the premium segment in China. Even the Hongqi brand, the most expensive public cars of which cost 1.5 million yuan (19.6 million rubles) in China, was not quite rightly attributed to the mass segment. However, the top three in this imported luxury were Porsche (772 SSI), Audi (771 SSI) and BMW (769 SSI).
Chinese brands also did not get high places among brands of the mass segment. The first five places were distributed between the joint ventures of GAC Honda (763 SSI), SAIC Buick (762 SSI), Dongfeng Honda (762 SSI), GAC Toyota (762 SSI), FAW Toyota (757 SSI), Dongfeng Nissan (756 SSI), FAW Volkswagen (756 SSI) and SAIC Volkswagen (755 SSI). For beginners who are not familiar with the Chinese market, we will explain its specifics. For local assembly of cars, foreign manufacturers have to organize joint production with local state-owned enterprises. Therefore, names like GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda appeared in the ranking. The Japanese brand is one here, but the manufacturers and sales channels are different.
As for purely Chinese brands, Changan and GAC Trumpchi shared the first place among them. They satisfy customers at 750 SSI. By the way, this result coincided with that of the Czech Skoda, which is produced in China by SAIC. The second place in Chinese brands was taken by Geely (749 SSI). She overtook Chery (748 SSI), leaving her only third place.
The fourth line was shared by three brands at once – Hongqi, Jetta and Tank. Their score was 747 SSI. Fifth place went to Haval (745 SSI) and sixth to Bestune (744 SSI). But Jetour turned out to be a failure in terms of customer satisfaction. It pleases Chinese customers only on 715 SSI.
