Car registrations: dangerous decline in August 2021

The Ecobonus is sold out and the Extrabonus is stopped, a measure is absolutely needed to unlock the incentives. This is the ‘cry for help’ launched by UNRAE, which speaks of the total collapse in sales of new cars in August 2021.

According to the data collected by the National Union of Foreign Motor Vehicle Representatives, the month just ended closes with only 64,689 registrations of new vehicles. Despite one more working day, the decline is 27.3% compared to August last year, affected by state incentives, just like today. In 2020, however, the results were different, the Bonuses had contributed to bringing sales to 88,973 units, in line with the same month of 2019 (despite the lockdown and health situation in the midst of the emergency).

With the August figure, the cars lost from the market in 8 months compared to the same period in 2019, exceed 260,000 units. Add to this also the rapid exhaustion of the Ecobonus which was allocated in July by the DL Sostegni Bis (for electric and hybrid cars with emissions between 0 and 60 g / km), the situation certainly cannot improve by the end of the year, indeed, it remains dramatic for the sector.

Michele Crisci, President of UNRAE, explains: “A paradoxical situation because, as is well known, with the expiry of the Ecobonus, the complementary funds allocated to finance the Extrabonus remain unusable. This is how it stands blocking the purchase of vehicles more in line with the commitments of the PNRR to accelerate the path of decarbonisation of transport and the modernization of the obsolete Italian fleet “.

The solution? According to Crisci, “an immediate refinancing of the Ecobonus is needed for the 0-20 and 21-60 g / Km CO2 bands through any regulatory vehicle available in a short time, or, in an emergency, with a partial transfer to the Ecobonus of still resources in the Extrabonus, thus immediately restarting the incentive mechanism e by relaunching sales of pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids”.

UNRAE invites you to also refinance incentives for the higher emission bands, which in any case made it possible to achieve excellent results as regards the modernization of the fleet in circulation. These are urgent measures, which serve to revive a sector that has been suffering for more than a year and a half and which is now also afflicted by the problem of semiconductor crisis, which is already delaying the production of several models and could negatively affect sales.

Making a comparison between August 2021 and August 2020, from the point of view of users, there is a sharp decline in private individuals who stop at 69% of market share, up (thanks to incentives) compared to 62% share of the top 8 months. Self-registrations lost almost half of their volumes and reached 7.9% representativeness, down from 9.9% in the January-August cumulative. Registrations to companies also fell during the month, confirming a 5% share, close to 5.4% in the 8 months. In slight decline the long term rental, which drops to 15% of penetration, while in the cumulative it covers 17.1% of sales. Plus sign for short-term rental, even if at 3.2% share compared to 5.7% in the first 8 months of the year (UNRAE data).

Taking a look from the point of view of the power supplies, petrol and diesel are losing about half of their volumes, LPG grows, methane stable. On the other hand, the growth of electrified car models was very high, thanks to the contribution of incentives. All market segments are down.

From the analysis by bodywork, the interest in sedans and station wagons decreases, while that for the crossovers and off-road vehicles, ‘new’ players in the market. And finally, as regards second-hand vehicles, there were 203,844 changes of ownership in August, gross of mini-crops.
