Suzuki has started offering an innovated S-Cross on the Czech market. The brand suffocates that the model is completely new, but in reality it still targets its traditional and very conservative customers. Under the innovated shell is the same uncomplicated universal technique.
Changing the coat did a lot with S-Cross. Especially from the front, the novelty has changed radically compared to the old version. Now Suzuki has fully become one of the compact SUVs, before that it doesn’t know where it belongs, whether it’s more of a raised station wagon or a typical “esúvéčko”. And so it stood straddling between the two categories.
“It suffered a bit because the S-Cross was something between a car and an SUV category. Now it is clearly trying to be included and we believe that thanks to this change it will reach far more customers,” says Tomáš Teufl, head of the Czech representation of Suzuki.
The Suzuki S-Cross has been on the market since 2013, and even though the novelty looks like it, it is not a completely new generation, but rather a very fundamental modernization. It uses an identical chassis and engine, even the dimensions are essentially the same. However, the new, significantly higher bow with a redesigned mask and headlights changed his appearance. The designers have also worked on the rear of the car, so it looks robust, as if its center of gravity has risen.
However, the way of entering the front row is confidential to all owners of the Japanese universal, who like when they do not have to bend too much into the car. Inside, he sits high enough, who is not used to it, will initially tend to lower the driver’s seat a little, although unfortunately it is no longer possible.
But the interior is almost the same as before, it just looks more valuable. Alarm clocks are good old analog, although far nicer and more modern. A stand-alone 9 “digital screen with compelling graphics has moved to the center of the dashboard in the top version. S-Cross now has far more features and safety assistants, but they are nothing special in this class, the current competition of S-Cross already has them.
For example, you can now connect the car via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the S-Cross can also have a 360-degree camera and is able to recognize signs and warn that you have crossed from lane to lane.
The interior is just as spacious, the rear backrests can be adjusted and the trunk can hold at least 430 liters. Nissan Qashqai offers 460, Dacia Duster 445 l, Škoda Karoq of course in this discipline with its 521 liters reigns.
There have been no changes under the hood, the car is powered by a mild-hybrid fourteen-liter engine with an output of 95 kW, which is offered with either a manual or automatic transmission, both for the version with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The mild-hybrid technology with a 48-volt system allows the car to temporarily increase acceleration performance and also ensures reasonable fuel consumption.
At the presentation of the novelty, we had the opportunity to drive the car for 20 minutes, which is not enough for the relevant test and consumption data would not be meaningful. But this morning there was fresh snow, so at least we can say that the AllGrip all-wheel drive system is very capable. S-Cross is one of the universal cars in its category, which can easily handle the roads along the meadow to the cottage and do not give up a well-snowed hill. It is very comfortable to drive, willing to go for gas and it is also known that it is not a cumbersome SUV, depending on the version it weighs about 1.3 tons.
The price starts at 508,900 crowns, it already has air conditioning, 17 “alloy wheels and an audio system with a 7” display, the cheapest ATV costs CZK 577,900. With regard to durable technology, very good driving characteristics, efficient all-wheel drive and, more recently, a more modern coat, the car is a bit unjustly appreciated in its category.
