Car Production in Mexico Continues to Grow in July: Report

Mexico City, Aug 4 (EFE).- Car production in Mexican plants grew by 13.22% year-on-year in July to 294,350 units, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.

Likewise, the export of light vehicles increased by 31.21%, to 275,765, and sales in the domestic market shot up 32.59% to 110,843, according to the report from the autonomous institute.

In this way, the manufacture of light vehicles in Mexico accumulates an interannual growth of 13.83% in the first 7 months of 2023 and national sales register a rise of 23.57%.

“During January-July 2023, 743,930 light vehicles were sold and, in this same period, 2,186,985 units were produced in Mexico,” detailed the Inegi.

Meanwhile, exports of cars made in Mexico have increased 13.7% so far this year, a total of 1,835,971 units.

The importance of the automotive industry for Mexico lies in the fact that it represents almost 4% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 20.5% of manufacturing GDP, more than any other sector, according to the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA). ).

The information from the Inegi comes from 22 companies affiliated with AMIA, Giant Motors Latin America and Autos Orientales Picacho.

After 2 years of falls and shortage of inputs, the Mexican automotive sector rebounded in 2022 with an annual growth of 9.24% in production, 5.86% in exports and 7.03% in sales.

In 2020, the production and export of vehicles fell by more than 20% amid the covid-19 pandemic, which forced the closure of this industry during the first months of the outbreak.

While in 2021, manufacturing fell 2% annually due to a shortage of semiconductor chips, and exports rose just 0.94%.
