Plaintiff BrightK Consulting claims that the cup holders are dangerous and that even a small amount of spilled liquid from tea, coffee or juice in the stand can enter the airbag control module located just below the console.
If the contacts oxidize, the airbags may activate spontaneously. This claim applies to all X7 crossovers placed on the market. The specific car, directly related to the lawsuit, was purchased new in December 2019.
In July 2021, a warning for defective airbags appeared in the car for the first time. The company, which is suing the German carmaker, has evidence that BMW knew about the problem earlier due to several other similar complaints.
BMW has not yet commented on the current situation. But the company will probably soon be forced to withdraw tens of thousands of crossovers and fix the problem, and the claim is for 5 million dollars.
