Car of the Year 2022: Mercedes-Benz EQS is the Toughest of the Year

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the name of the Toughest Car of the Year 2022. The German premium electric car is a powerhouse of technology and “see me” factor, paving the way for electric vehicles on the road.

Even with an impressive selection of Tesla, Audi, Jaguar and BMW, among others, no one offers luxury cars at the same level. This is the reason why the jury finally chose the electric cars’ S-Class as the Toughest of the Year.

Very even

Of the ten cars that ended up in the final of Car of the Year 2022 – out of a total of 28 candidates – EQS was in the company of the BMW i4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E in the roughing heat. There, the jury members could give three points to the car they thought deserved the coveted title of Toughest of the Year 2022.

Here it was very even between the two Germans, while the Mustang did not get a single vote and ended up with zero points. The Mercedes-Benz EQS received three points from four jurors (a total of 12 points), while the BMW i4 finished with three three-pointers (9 points).

Too bad for the BMW i4, but the Norwegian importer can take comfort in that the car finally won the most generous prize – Car of the Year 2022.

Becomes fully electric

At Mercedes importer Bertel O. Steen, however, they are very happy with the price.

– We are very proud, and think it is incredible that EQS received the title of Toughest of the Year. EQS is our electric flagship, and a car that is meant to show the utmost of what Mercedes-Benz achieves. Therefore, it is extra nice with this recognition, says communications consultant André Jaskiewicz at Mercedes-Benz Norway to DinSide.

– What do you think it is about EQS that makes it stand out?

– It is the first electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz – and the very spearhead in the model series. It has the combination of a range of up to 780 kilometers, an impressive level of comfort, innovative interior solutions such as MBUX Hyperscreen and excess power to match it all. At present, this car has virtually no direct competitors.

– Jaskiewicz believes the award is a great recognition for Mercedes-Benz’s electric investment.

– In a few years, Mercedes will in practice be a fully electric brand in Norway, and a price like this is a confirmation that customers who choose an electric model from us have made a good choice, he explains.

Must wait

Even though cars have started to arrive in Norway, new customers have to wait a long time before they can be given a Mercedes-Benz EQS, according to the communications consultant.

– Due to greater demand than expected, a car ordered today will be delivered in around ten to twelve months. Some dealers may have pre-specified cars ready for delivery already in the new year, he says.

However, André Jaskiewicz will not reveal how many people have ordered the car to date – or anything about the internal sales targets.

Only a short time after we opened for orders, however, we had sold more editions of EQS, than our best year for the S-Class ever. Since then, orders have continued at a good pace, he says,

That said, only 85 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes have been registered in Norway since the turn of the millennium … In 2021, according to the Road Traffic Information Office (OFV), 18 copies of the electric car EQS have been registered.
