Car of the Year 2021: the list of 29 nominees for the Car of the Year award in Europe was published

AND the nominees are… As if it were the Oscars for cars, the Car of the Year (COTY) is, as we always say, one of the most coveted awards by automakers because although it is organized and voted in Europe, they have global reach and importance: everyone wants to hold the title of “Car of the Year” as happened with the new Peugeot 208 when it was presented in Argentina. Four months after the list of 36 candidates was known, the jury now published the list of nominees, a kind of clean pass of the first selection.

In this new list there are 29 vehicles that were selected, leaving behind the most exclusive ones such as the Aston Martin DBX, the Ferrari Roma and SF90, the Rolls Royce Ghost, but also some models that can achieve very good sales levels and are more accessible like the Volkswagen Caddy or the Opel Mokka. Again we can review which ones have already arrived in Argentina (the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the Ford Kuga and the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB), those that are already confirmed for 2021 (Audi A3, BMW 4 Series, Fiat 500e, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sorento and Land Rover Defender), while there are several products that could arrive – still without official confirmation – and others already discarded that are detailed at the end of the note by color. As is customary in recent years, most of them offer at least one electrified version and two are 100% electric vehicles, among which is the Volkswagen ID.3 that I consider – on a personal level – as a possible winner of this edition for its characteristics, the good reviews it garnered from the press and the large number of orders it accumulates. However, our European colleagues also highlight the Dacia Sandero as another great candidate, after its extensive renovation.

The vote that will define the 7 finalists happened on January 8 and as a particularity, given the context of the pandemic, for the first time the winner will be announced online on March 1 and not in the framework of the Geneva Motor Show as it used to be. to be made. It is worth remembering that the jury in charge of the election is made up of 60 specialized journalists from 23 countries of the Old Continent. Who will be the winner? Will it arrive in Argentina as 208? In a few more weeks, we will at least have an advance.
