Check24 calculated the cost of car insurance for 30 electric cars and compared them with the insurance premiums for similar combustion engines. Car insurance for an electric car can be significantly cheaper than for a comparable combustion engine.
Fully comprehensive insurance for the Kia E-Soul including battery protection costs 396 euros per year for single users on average for the five cheapest tariffs. Insurance for a comparable combustion engine, on the other hand, costs 643 euros. The fully comprehensive protection of an electric car is almost 250 euros or 38 percent cheaper. Smart’s small city car, the fortwo coupé with electric drive, can be insured for 13 percent less than Smart’s combustion engine model.
“Car insurance for electric cars can be cheaper than insurance for a comparable combustion engine,” says Michael Roloff, Managing Director of car insurance at CHECK24. “However, repairs to electric cars are often very expensive. This is mainly due to the construction, which is not very easy to repair. Before taking out car insurance, consumers should always compare tariffs in order to save costs.”
