The insurance industry has published new regional classes for car insurance. For around 4.7 million drivers, this could mean higher insurance premiums.
However, contributions could also fall for just as many, said the General Association of Insurers (GDV) Nothing is likely to change for around 33 million vehicle owners.
Accidents lead to poor classification
The background to this is the new regional classes in motor vehicle liability insurance as well as fully and partially comprehensive insurance, which the GDV has now published. The higher the accident damage in a certain district, the worse the classification in the respective classes. The decisive factor is not where the damage occurred, but in which district the vehicle is registered.
For insurers, the GDV regional classes are one of several tariff features that they use to calculate premiums.

And that means that the classifications nationwide for 49 districts with around 4.7 million drivers will get worse. 59 districts and also around 4.7 million drivers will benefit from better regional classes in the future. The classifications can be used by insurance companies immediately for new contracts and from the next insurance year for existing contracts.
Large contribution differences
They lead to significant differences in insurance premiums depending on the region. For example, the comparison portal Verivox has calculated that liability insurance for a VW Passat for a 45-year-old single driver who drives 15,000 kilometers a year in central Berlin is on average more than half as expensive as in Emden in East Frisia.
According to this model calculation, insurance premiums in the Berlin district of Nikolassee are around a third higher than in the immediately neighboring Brandenburg district of Kleinmachnow.
