A car for organ donation, which had to be rushed from Groningen to Alkmaar, was parked in front of the barriers on the Julianaplein in Groningen on Wednesday evening. Due to a defect, they no longer went up.
The jam caused a traffic jam in both directions.
The car for organ donation probably came from the UMCG. A photographer saw how the car bypassed the traffic jam and came to the front in front of the closed barrier.
The driver consulted the bridge keeper and then decided that there was nothing to do but detour.
Alleviate the suffering
The traffic jam is not annoying for everyone. Some people make the best of it, three men kicked a ball on the road.
Later, members of the nearby rowing club brought a few pieces of wood. These made it possible for motorists from the direction of Friesland to turn around via the central reservation. It was not used for a long time: shortly after the temporary solution, the fault was resolved.
Cause still unknown, mechanics on the way
It is unclear how the failure occurred. Rijkswaterstaat sent technicians. The disturbance was resolved around 8 pm.
That meant that the traffic could drive again.
More than an hour later there was another blockage. Then mechanics lowered the barriers. Presumably to be able to repair the bridge. Rijkswaterstaat instituted a diversion. The work was completed around 9:45 pm and everything was functioning properly again.
