AMERSFOORT Three residents of the municipality of Amersfoort, aged 21, 25 and 27, died in an accident in Amersfoort on the night of Sunday to Monday.
The car they were in crashed into a tree along the Stadsring around 1:30 am, after which the vehicle ended up in the water. It is not yet clear exactly how the accident could have happened.
Officers driving on the Stadsring saw tire tracks and vehicle parts at the edge of the water and called in the other emergency services. The fire brigade responded with a diving team, which rescued the three from the water. Attempts were made to resuscitate the young men on site, but to no avail: all three occupants died.
The police are further investigating the circumstances and are asking witnesses to come forward. “We hope that people who live near the Stadsring have camera images that show something. Or maybe there are people who are woken up around half past two in the morning by a loud bang. That already helps in reconstructing the timeline of the accident.”
