Car deliberately enters German carnival parade, around 30 injured NOW

Around 30 people, including children, were injured in the German town of Volkmarsen on Monday afternoon as a car was run into a carnival parade. According to German police, the motorist, who was immediately arrested, acted intentionally. The suspect is first treated for his injuries before he can be heard.

A number of the victims are seriously injured. Little is yet known about the circumstances of the incident.

Eyewitnesses tell German media that the car accelerated and drove 30 meters through the crowd. After the vehicle had stopped, the driver would still have accelerated. The police have not yet confirmed this.

Volkmarsen is located in the state of Hessen, in the middle of Germany. All other carnival parades in Hesse were stopped on Monday by order of the police in connection with the incident.

Nothing yet known about motive

In Germany and parts of the Netherlands, Monday, Rosenmontag – “Rose Monday” – is celebrated. Monday is the highlight of the carnival weekend in Germany and attracts hundreds of thousands of people to numerous organized carnival parades in the country.

The incident comes four days after a 43-year-old shooter in Hanau, Germany, killed nine people at two different shootings. According to German justice there are Clues that the man in Hanau acted from an extreme right-wing motive. It is not yet known what the motive of the motorist in Volkmarsen is.
