Police have urged the people of Waukesha, near the city of Milwaukee, to avoid downtown. It is not yet clear whether it is an accident or an attack. The police were able to trace the car involved and have since arrested the driver.
The car, a red SUV, drove into the procession just behind the marching band of a local school. Video images of this have been published on social media. In a second video, the police appear to be opening fire on the vehicle, which is trying to get past the barriers.

According to the head of the local fire service, 11 adults and 12 children have been transported to various hospitals. A witness, Angelito Tenorio, told AP he was watching the parade with his family when they saw the car approaching. “We heard a loud bang and then all we heard was a deafening scream. And we saw crying people running away. It happened so fast, it was pretty terrifying.’
Waukesha is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year with various festivities spread over the year. The parade is traditionally the kick-off of the winter season.
